The calendar of festivities in Brazil is composed of several religious celebrations. Many of them are originally related to the arrival of Portuguese and other colonists and even slaves to Brazil. Over time, and generally due to the mixture with local traditions, religious customs acquired a specific and regional aspect, giving rise to some festivities of great national importance.

This is the case of the feast of Nossa Senhora da Aparecida, patron saint of Brazil, in the city of Aparecida (SP). Today, these celebrations, especially those of Christian origin, have a strong popular appeal. In some cases, they are able to gather millions of people during the festivities. Pilgrimages, dances, rituals, traditional music and typical dishes can be part of the celebrations, the main element being the manifestation of faith. The festivities can take place all over the country, like the Catholic cycle of the Passion of Christ, or even have a strong regional character, like the Círio de Nazaré or Divino Espírito Santo.
